Stella Abrerra returns to the Southland to dance the pas de deux from Act 2 of Giselle at The Huntington Gardens for MUSE/IQUE’s final summer program. Abrera explains she spent many a childhood afternoon roaming the epic gardens at The Huntington and says she is “ecstatic to perform one of my favorite pas de deux in this glorious place with Cory Stearns!” She went on to thank MUSE/IQUE and Maestro Rachael Worby for “curating this beautiful event and for including us.” Abrera was last seen in her hometown when she performed in American Ballet Theatre’s productions of Harlequinade and The Nutcracker.
MUSE/IQUE, Pasadena’s pioneering performing arts organization, concludes its second summer music series at The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens on August 24 with BAND/TOGETHER, an evening inspired by the great feats of human history, and the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. Performances will take place at the Library Lawn.
Curated by MUSE/IQUE Founder and Artistic Director Rachael Worby, BAND/TOGETHER is an ode to human possibilities based on the truly old fashioned idea that music and togetherness make everything possible. In an age of cynicism, MUSE/IQUE’S summer finale is unabashedly optimistic. This is the music of the human spirit, written by some of history’s most triumphant composers and performed by the most energetic and skilled performers in the country. The theme of the evening is embodied by the dancers of American Ballet Theatre, presenting Johannes Brahms’ Variations on a Theme by Joseph Haydn, choreographed by Twyla Tharp; Dvořák’s Piano Trio No. 4 “Dumky”, choreographed by Jessica Lang; and Adolphe Adam’s Giselle Act II, Pas de Deux, choreographed by Kevin McKenzie. The piano duet Anderson & Roe brings four-hands magic to “America” from West Side Story and Saint-Saëns’ Danse Macabre to illustrate unique combinations of instruments and breathtaking ensembleship. Tenor Ashley Faatoalia will sing American classics “Did You See Jackie Robinson Hit That Ball,” “I Can’t Stop Loving You,” and “Fly Me to the Moon.”
The night is further illuminated by a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, and our nation’s greatest science. Film scores from First Man, The Right Stuff and Apollo 13 reveal the stories of humanity in harmony, uniting to achieve a remarkable goal. MUSE/IQUE also welcomes Dr. MiMi Aung, project manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), who will usher in the greatest classical masterwork influenced by space, Gustav Holst’s “Jupiter” from The Planets.

MUSE/IQUE’s SUMMER SERIES – MUSE/IQUE launched its inaugural summer series at The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens in June 2018. The centerpiece orchestral festival of the programming year, MUSE/IQUE’s summer series comprises three performances featuring a full orchestra and enriched repertoire. The entire series is curated
around one unifying theme that incorporates music, literature, visual art, and performance art.
MUSE/IQUE AT ARTNIGHT – MUSE/IQUE produces one free live music event annually in conjunction with Pasadena’s city-wide ArtNight Festival. This family-friendly series is a participatory dance party that serves 5,000-6,000 in the plaza of Paseo Colorado’s Garfield Promenade.
MUSE/IQUE COMMUNITY – MUSE/IQUE creates curriculum-based, small group music interactions that engage participants in a deeper experience of the repertoire and ideas behind each event. Formerly known as KIDS/IQUE, these community programs began serving foster and at-risk youth and have expanded to serve senior citizens, families in need, and other local groups at our partnering organizations.
