More than 500 students from 44 Los Angeles-area schools, alongside international virtual attendees, gathered at the Rose Bowl Stadium on Wednesday, April 30 for the Empowering Tomorrow, Today: Youth Leadership Summit. Hosted by the Rose Bowl Institute and the Pasadena Tournament of Roses, this year’s summit marked a milestone as it welcomed a global audience for the first time.

The event featured influential voices, immersive panels, and hands-on opportunities, all aimed at cultivating courage, purpose, and leadership in today’s youth.

Spotlight on Identity, Resilience, and Empowerment

Funded through private donations and corporate sponsors, the summit created an inclusive platform for young people to explore themes of identity, resilience, and empowerment. The day began with a moving keynote address by actress and activist Azita Ghanizada (Suits: LA), who shared her personal journey navigating identity and advocacy in the entertainment industry.

“Today was about reminding these incredible young people that their dreams are valid and their voices matter,” said Ghanizada.

Sports Media Panel Inspires with Stories of Authenticity

A standout moment of the summit was a leadership panel under the Rose Bowl’s marquee sign, moderated by ESPN broadcaster Holly Rowe. The discussion featured Malika Andrews (ESPN), Amanda Balionis (CBS Sports), and Jenny Taft (FOX Sports), who offered honest insights about navigating careers in high-pressure media landscapes.

Malika Andrews reflected, “When you walk in as the first to do something, you can either feel like you don’t belong, or embrace that difference as your power.”

Connecting Students to Resources That Matter

The summit also included Resource Row, where 24 local nonprofits and community organizations introduced students to opportunities in mental health, higher education, mentorship, internships, and civic engagement. Financial education was provided through a special session by Wescom Financial, a Rose Bowl Legacy Foundation donor.

Community Leaders Reflect on Youth Impact

“This summit is a testament to the values we uphold—giving youth a platform to lead, connect, and grow,” said Dedan Brozino, President of the Rose Bowl Legacy Foundation.

“Hosting it at the Rose Bowl—a symbol of unity and excellence—amplifies its meaning,” added Mark Leavens, President of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses.

Looking Ahead

As the Los Angeles region navigates today’s social and economic challenges, initiatives like the Youth Leadership Summit serve as vital investments in the future. The Rose Bowl Institute and the Pasadena Tournament of Roses remain committed to nurturing leadership, inclusion, and empowerment for generations to come.
