Students from South Pasadena High School win awards for their individual research papers

Congratulations to SPHS students Miles Bernath, Zoe Albornoz, and Justin Toshima for finishing in the top three places out of 230 entries in the Historical Research Paper category of the History Day Los Angeles Contest. This year’s theme is “Breaking Barriers in History.”

Following are the subject/titles of the students’ research papers:

  • Miles Bernath — A Revolution on the Silver Screen: How Film Broke Barriers in American Intellect
  • Zoe Albornoz — Queens of Noise: How the Revolutionary Women of Punk Rock Demolished Barriers and Transformed Society
  • Justin Toshima — The Struggles of Fitting In: How Chinese Immigrants Broke Political, Social, and Racial Barriers in America

This is the first time that the contest has been hosted virtually/online and the first time that SPHS students have participated. The students who placed will move on to the state competition in May 2020.

Kudos also to Haelee Kim and Sejin Hwang for entering history papers in the contest and to teacher Oliver Valcorza for helping inspire and coach the students.
