Hundreds of South Pasadenans came out bright and early for the much anticipated and beloved tradition of the Kiwanis Club Pancake Breakfast on 4th of July. Held at the iconic South Pasadena Firehouse, revelers were welcomed by Kiwanis members, South Pasadena firefighters, police officers, along with city staff and elected officials who gathered to make and share a delicious and hot pancake breakfast with all the fixings.

The first pancake breakfast was held in 1982 and has become one of the most popular 4th of July events that folks wake up early for to get in that line and meet with neighbors before heading out for the day’s festivities.

Longtime Kiwanis member, Sam Park, tells us “many of the attendees remarked at how much they look forward to this event each year. It’s one of the community’s highlights. So many different members of South Pasadena come to this annual gathering. Because of this special event, Kiwanis Club of South Pasadena raises thousands of dollars for local scholarships and initiatives for the children of our city and beyond.”

Echoing that sentiment is another longtime Kiwanis member, realtor Meg Middleman, who said, “I enjoyed serving the pancakes and greeting all who came. I am grateful for the large turnout, as the ticket sales go directly into serving the children in our town. We focus on the kids from the high school and give them scholarships, gift cards to the middle schoolers, and new bikes for deserving children at each of our elementary schools. To promote literacy at the elementary schools, we built bookmobiles that we fill with new books for the kids to keep and take home to read.” She went on to explain that specifically at the middle and high school, Kiwanis helped to create wellness centers in cooperation with the SPUSD, SPEF, DUDES, PTSA, Train Your Brain, and school social workers, providing a safe space for kids to relax and unwind. “It is a great way to promote mental health for our teenagers.”

The breakfast started when the creators of the Festival of Balloons, Ted & Joan Shaw and Dave Margrave reached out to Kiwanis president at the time, Jim Hasselbarth, who stepped up and said yes. “In the beginning, the breakfast was a small and fun start for the day’s festivites,” remembers 30-year Kiwanis member, John Vandercook. “Over the years it has become a look forward to community event where we are serving the children and grandchildren of so many community members that have been attending for decades now.”

President Elect and Chair of the pancake breakfast, Tom Carson, tells us that the turnout was excellent with first reports estimated at over 1600 attendees.  “We would like to thank Chief Riddle and the South Pasadena Fire Department for being such gracious hosts and supporters,” he said. “Sheila Pautsch and her team from the Community Services department were, as always, very supportive and responsive. We also give thanks to all of our generous sponsors who financially supported and/or donated beverages to the Pancake Breakfast. A special thanks to longtime sponsor Jones Coffee, who donated their freshly brewed coffee, cups, and condiments. Their awesome coffee is always a hit at the Pancake Breakfast. Last but not least, we would like to thank all the awesome volunteers from throughout the community who help us set up, cook and prepare food, serve beverages and then break it all down. The Pancake Breakfast would not be successful without community support.”

And Vandercook promises it’s not going anywhere. “The pancake breakfast has certainly become a wonderful tradition.”

The South Pasadena Kiwanis Club meets the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month at 12:00 noon at ReNew at 699 Monterey Road, South Pasadena. South Pasadenans are invited to come for lunch and meetings to support our youth.
