SPMS Math Team Wins Top Honors at Math Field Day | SPUSD Snapshot

The South Pasadena Middle School Math Team captured the Sweepstakes Trophy at the 42nd Alhambra Math Field Day. Seven middle schools and 133 students from the San Gabriel Valley gathered at Mark Keppel High School on Saturday, March 11, 2023 for the competition.

The following South Pasadena Middle School students received medals for their outstanding efforts:

Gallery Walk (Art and Geometry) – Isabelle Whiting (1st)

Matherhorn (Team of Two) – Lucca Huang and Daxton Brown (1st), Will Schwartz and Itusi Yoshioka (2nd), Deborah Chong and Brendan Chew (3rd)

Team Math Jeopardy – Zoe Chen, Kimy Zhang, Cadence Ni, and Fredrik Wong (2nd)

Approximath (Estimation) – Abigail Kim, Claire Mao, Lacie Zhou (2nd)

Final Round (Advanced Mathematics) — Brett Chang, Zoe Chen, Kimy Zhang, and Jerry Zhang (1st)

In additional SPMS math team news, Jerry Zhang is the first student in the history of South Pasadena Unified School District to qualify for the USA Junior Mathematical Olympiad. Zhang achieved this prestigious ranking as a result of his outstanding scores in two prior rounds of the Olympiad. More information is available here.

The SPMS math team has advanced to the state championship of Mathcounts. The event will be held March 18 at California Baptist University in Riverside. The team of Jerry Zhang, Kimy Zhang, Brett Chang, Zoe Chen, and Will Schwartz defeated all middle schools in the San Gabriel Valley to reach the state finals.

Coached by SPMS teachers Eric Aispuro and Katy Chen, the math team also received assistance from parents Tracy Ho and Jenny Li who helped coordinate the many math activities this school year.
