Around town this month of November you will see the distinctive orange-and-black lawn signs of – not another political campaign, but – the South Pasadena Educational Foundation (SPEF), thanking families and businesses who have given money to SPEF to support all five local public schools.

The SPEF signs acknowledge donors from the past year, but many donations were prompted by SPEF’s recently completed Fall Fund Drive. Notwithstanding the difficulties that we all are facing in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic and remote learning, South Pasadena came through for our schools this year just as in years past.

Under the unwavering leadership of SPEF Board Members Emilia Aldana and Julie Halverson, who spearheaded the Fall Fund Drive, and with all SPEF Board Members assisting, the drive yielded $270,000 for our schools.

“We are especially grateful this year for the community’s generous support for the schools,” said Aldana.

If you haven’t yet made a donation to SPEF yet this year, there is still time. Go online to spef4kids.org/donate to participate.

And before the calendar year ends, SPEF will have another fun event – the inaugural SPEF Virtual Trivia Night — for the good cause of funding South Pasadena’s public schools. Everyone is invited to join this online competition on December 4, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The trivia is geared toward adults, but children are welcome, too. The cost is $20 for an individual or $95 for a team (of any size). The event will be hosted by Trivia LA. To sign up, or to get more information, go to spef4kids.org/virtual-trivia-night.
