South Pasadena Beautiful will continue a historic spring tradition hosting its 49th annual Garden Tour on Saturday, April 13th from 2 – 5 pm. This year’s free tour focuses on four sustainable gardens and will include a range of green living practices including organic gardening, landscaping with natives, creating wildlife habitat, recycling materials in the garden and more.

The tour begins at the South Pasadena Community Garden at 1028 Magnolia St. The vibrant garden which was created in 2015 has 39 plots for local residents who want to garden. It will be location of SPB’s popular Plant Swap event where visitors are invited to bring a plant and take a plant. A large variety of plants are available including baby tomato plants donated by Bellefontaine Nursery.

The tour will include many native plants which are an excellent choice for people who are interested in conserving water, soil, and wildlife. Gardeners love insects in their garden and planting California natives is a great way to bring in not only beneficial predatory species, which help control vegetable garden pests, but also other insects, which help sustain birds throughout the year.

In addition to the Community Garden which produces mostly vegetables, herbs and flowers, other gardens on tour have dedicated space for growing food as well.  An array of vegetables as well as many fruit trees will be on tour. In addition to a wide variety of citrus trees visitors will also find apples, pomegranates, and guavas. This garden tour hosts very artistic gardens with a lot of charm.

The Garden Tour begins on Magnolia Street with two gardens, continues north with two more gardens on Foothill Street and finishes with a spectacular garden on Fairview north of Buena Vista. Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer visitors’ gardening questions.

This year SPB will host an evening of wine tasting after the tour at one of the garden homes. Guests will learn about biodynamic wines from local sommelier Stephanie Schaeffer and enjoy fresh artisanal pizza. The event is a fundraiser for the SPB re-landscape project of the South Pasadena Post Office and will be a silent auction with wine tastings from Mission Wines, frames from Old Focals and more.
