“I love the theme this year because it celebrates the hundreds of SPEF board members who have had a vision to help provide educational excellence to the South Pasadena Unified School District students,” said SPEF Executive Director Stacey Petersen. “These parents have put in thousands and thousands of hours over the years in hard work for this goal, and to celebrate is a treat.”

Not only was it the beginning of SPEF, the fundraising arm for the local school district, but 1979 was the year SONY released the Walkman, ESPN began to attract sports fans, the Three Mile Island nuclear accident occurred in Pennsylvania, “Rocky II” was among the top movies, and Donna Summer was belting “Hot Stuff” and “Bad Girls” among favorite tunes on the radio.

“It’s going to be another wonderful evening, celebrating the ‘70s and SPEF’s 40th birthday,” said South Pasadena Unified School District Superintendent Geoff Yantz. “If it’s anything like last year, I’m sure it will be sold out.”

In recognizing SPEF’s importance, Yantz said the organization provides the necessary funds to support critical programs for the local educational system.

“Fundraisers like Parti Gras, giving recognition to our schools, help to pull the community together,” he said.

The festive event will feature a variety of foods from area restaurants, a silent and live auction and dancing late into the night.

“Looking forward to seeing you there,” said Kathleen Michel, the 2019 Parti Gras chair.
