Letter to the Editor | Support Erik Gammell for School Board

SouthPasadenan.com News | South Pasadena resident Erik Gammell has entered the local school board race in November

By Noel Garcia, AYSO Region 214 Commissioner

I first met Erik Gammell as a parent several years ago while our kids played together in the park. Our first conversations were about the schools, and I could see that he cared deeply about a high quality school system, the very reason he moved to South Pasadena. Since that time I have had the pleasure to work with Erik in my role as the Commissioner of AYSO Region 214.

Erik has served as a volunteer for years, gaining my confidence as a trusted coaching mentor, and most recently through his role in reviewing safety protocols for our newly launched clinics. At each turn, Erik asked thoughtful questions and searched for solutions that considered a variety of perspectives. His creative approach to problem solving, leadership abilities and dedication to our community and youth have all stood out in his role on our AYSO Board.

Furthermore, Erik’s background in business administration and strategic thinking will provide a unique perspective that can only benefit our schools. As a non-profit consultant, he is focused on helping non-profits plan strategically, create accountability, and focus on governance and oversight. Our district will face some difficult financial decisions as we continue through this pandemic and the economic realities of our school funding structure which is why Erik’s skills in the area of business finance will be an asset to the shared decision making process of the SPUSD School Board.

Erik has always been open-minded and accessible; he is thoughtful and pragmatic. I know from my own experience that he is committed to ensuring everyone in the community is heard, as we work towards doing what is best for all the families in the district.

Our school board and community needs a leader like Erik – please join me in voting for Erik Gammell for School Board!
