The Board of the Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library thanks the community for turning out in force on Saturday May 22 to restock our Bookstore with used books.

Thousands of books came in during our book drive that day at the Library Community Room. We are grateful for your contributions after more than a year of not being able to accept books because of the pandemic.

Lee Bothast, who grew up in South Pasadena, had been waiting for the day we could accept books. He wanted his parents’ extensive collection to go to our library, and we were glad to accept it. He even signed up to volunteer in the Bookstore.

Lee’s father loved books on elephants, so there will soon be plenty of oversized books about them in the Bookstore. He donated his mother’s now-vintage sheet music and many books.

Six members from Girl Scout Troop 2131 arrived to donate their books together.

We were happy to see library supporters and friends pull up in front of the Library Community Room to unload boxes and shopping bags filled with books.

The mood at the drive was joyous. “The community was grateful that their beloved library as well as the bookstore are opening again,” said Karen Bell, Friends Board Member, who with Board Member Karen Weinstock organized the drive.

The Friends Bookstore is the primary way we raise funds for the Library. The Bookstore will reopen June 15. Shortly thereafter, we plan to hold a special sale offering books at deeply discounted prices. Thanks to the public’s donations, we also received numerous high-quality books suitable for gifts. Many will be available at our Holiday Book Sale in December.

Our thanks also go to book-drive volunteers. These include Friends Board members and Bookstore volunteers.  We thank Jim, Jordan and Kevin Bell, family members of Board member Karen Bell. Their help with the heavy lifting was indispensable and very much appreciated. Bianca Richards, president, Library Board of Trustees, came to visit and stayed for the entire time to help. We could not have done this without the Library staff, as well.

We thank the South Pasadenan staff, who publicized the book drive and the library’s reopening in both digital and print editions.
