Jeff Chi and his South Pasadena High football team can be thankful they don’t have to return to the city of El Monte this season to play another game.
The Tigers’ two losses have come in the town that produces tall, massive, fleet-footed talented players who can put points on the board in abundance – and in quick fashion.
South Pasadena’s defense has given up a combined 111 points while scoring only 13 in a pair of lopsided contests this year in a city that likes its football.
In week two, El Monte rolled to a 59-6 victory over the Tigers and Friday, capping off week four, Arroyo walked off with a resounding 52-7 victory.
In a contest that had few highlights for the visitors, the Tigers finally puts points on the board with 7:39 left on the fourth quarter clock when quarterback Samuel Luna-Long found Jordan Bounyaseng down the left side for a 24-yard touchdown. Quentin Pithey added the extra point, giving the South Pasadena crowd and sideline reason to let out, what else, a Tiger roar.
Arroyo had already scored the first 52 points of the game, and by the time South Pasadena prevailed the outcome was long decided. The Knights jumped out to a 38-0 lead at the half with relative ease, and made it 52-0 by the end of the third quarter. Arroyo helped the Tigers’ cause by pulling most of its starters in the second half, giving way largely to the junior varsity squad.
The win improved Arroyo’s record to 3-1 while the Tigers are 2-2 and looking to return home Friday against Alhambra.
“It wasn’t pretty,” said Chi after the drubbing to Knights. “We looked pretty sloppy and we have a lot of guys banged up and hurt. We’ll just look for a way to get better. It has been tough trying to field a team with guys that are not available to play.”
