Every Californian with an email and internet connection can now explore California’s Bookshelf, a digital library offering over 300,000 eBooks and eAudiobooks—completely free. Unlike previous systems that required logging in through a participating library, this new platform provides direct access with just a few clicks.

“With just a few clicks, any Californian can grab what they’re looking for on California’s Bookshelf,” said California State Librarian Greg Lucas. “From your home, a coffee shop, or while traveling, this virtual library is always available—and did I mention it’s free?”

How to Access California’s Bookshelf

California’s Bookshelf is made possible through a partnership with the Palace Project, which provides access through the Palace app. To start reading, follow these five simple steps:

  1. Download the free Palace app on your iOS or Android device.
  2. Search for “California’s Bookshelf” using the “Find My Library” feature in the app.
  3. Browse the collection and select a book to read. Click “Get” or “Reserve.”
