Building Height Limits on Council Agenda | Critical City Plan Issue

A consultant to the city manager will develop a strategy for getting you and me to vote for removing the height limit, or so it appears.

In 1982, it was proposed that the two buildings shown below be built on Fair Oaks Avenue where the Pollo Loco strip mall and the large brown office building next to it at 625 Fair Oaks are now. Submitted by Ron Rosen

By Ron Rosen, South Pasadena resident:

EDITOR’S NOTE: This letter was written to apply to June 3rd’s Council meeting which was postponed until Wednesday, June 10.

In 1982, it was proposed that the two buildings shown below be built on Fair Oaks Avenue where the Pollo Loco strip mall and the large brown office building next to it at 625 Fair Oaks are now.

In response, in 1983 the citizens of South Pasadena passed an ordinance preventing any building from exceeding 45 feet in height.

At this Wednesday’s meeting, the City Council will vote on whether to fund a “study” about putting a proposal to remove that height limit on the ballot.

It appears that part of what the consultant will do is develop strategies for getting you and me to vote for removing the height limit.

If you have concerns about the over-development that some in city government appear to be seeking, let the City Council know that you don’t want your tax money (discretionary or not) spent on putting this matter on the ballot.

One of the rationales offered for removing height limits is new state-mandated housing requirements. For a city that successfully fought the state over a freeway for 70 years, those on the Council who aren’t inclined to stand up to the state regarding over-development should be ashamed of themselves.
