  • The South Pasadena Arts Council (SPARC) is developing a roster of potential Board members to join their growing organization. They would like to invite you to a short gathering to assist them in identifying excellent individuals with enthusiasm and a love of the arts and/or arts education, and with expertise in finance/accounting, marketing/social media strategy, fundraising/grant writing, event planning, and non-profit governance. They would love for you to join us for a wine and sweets reception and be a part of the conversation to nominate additional members for the SPARC Board and Advisory Board.

Jackie Robinson’s 100th Birthday to be Celebrated with Film Screening at South Pasadena Public Library on Thursday, January 31 at 7:00 p.m.to 10:00 p.m. In honor of the 100th Birthday of Jackie Robinson (1919-1972), a free screening of “The Jackie Robinson Story,” a classic 1950 film starring Jackie as himself will be presented at the South Pasadena Public Library. The free event for all ages will be celebrated in the Library Community Room on Thursday, January 31 at 7 pm on the eve of Black History Month. It is sponsored by the South Pasadena Public Library, the Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library, and the Lucille and Edward R. Roybal Foundation. Click here for more info.

Otter Story Hour A live storytelling event held in the basement of a pub, Griffins of Kinsale, from 7 to 9 pm usually on the first Monday of the month. Visit the website and our Facebook page Our Otter storytellers pull up meaningful experiences from the depths of their lives, crack them open on their heart to expose what is tender and get them off their chest. League Day: Foster care in the school system and the challenges and barriers to success. Thursday, February 7 8:30 – Registration/ 9:00 – Breakfast/ 9:45 – Speakers/ 11:30 – committee Reports. Speakers will include Jeanette Mann, a League member who has been the co-chair of the All Saints Church Foster Care Project; Randall Trice, a former foster youth who is now working at Pacific Clinics and is a senior at Azusa Pacific University; and Mikala Rahn, the founder and CEO of Learning Works which provides alternative education to at-risk youth. A Clean Power Alliance presentation will be held Wednesday, February 13 at 7:00 p.m. in the Library Community Room at 1115 El Centro. The Clean Power Alliance (CPA) is California’s new, locally operated electricity provider for communities across Los Angeles and Ventura Counties. The CPA’s program objective is to provide options for a higher level of renewable energy content at competitive rates. The CPA purchases energy on behalf of its member agencies where energy is procured from mostly non-polluting, clean and renewable sources such as solar, wind, and hydroelectric power (no coal or nuclear power). The City Council has set the default energy mix for South Pasadena at 100% Renewable/GHG Free (for residential customers, effective February 2019). Customers will still be able to opt in at their preferred energy mix options offered by the CPA. The CPA will provide four written notices to customers when beginning service so that you can make informed decisions regarding the type of electricity you want. Southern California Edison continues to deliver power, read electric meter, send monthly bill, and provide the same maintenance and other services. Please click here for more information on the Clean Power Alliance.

Into the Unknown – A Portrait of South Pasadena CYNDI BEMEL, 2018 Through March 3, 2019 SPARC Gallery @ City Hall (2nd floor) “Into the Unknown was born from my passion as a photo-ethnographer and storyteller. I’ve been roaming the city as an integral part of my personal journey, and this documentary project is far from over. Many of the images capture new perspectives of familiar places. I enjoy juxtaposing my images with reflections and textures of our urban landscape combining the old with the new. Experimenting with light and dark enhances the intrigue of the everyday moment. I appreciate how the black and white of my images taps into a deeper vision of what we might otherwise take for granted, a fresh visual interpretation of the day to day. I strive to capture the subtleties of the world and offer an impression of the ever-changing environment that reflects the tremendous vitality of South Pasadena.” – Cyndi Bemel
