SOUTH PASADENA, CA (May 7, 2024) The South Pasadena Tournament of Roses (SPTOR) Float committee will host a giant yard sale at the War Memorial Building on Friday, May 17, and Saturday, May 18. This event is crucial to the committee’s fundraising efforts for South Pasadena’s iconic volunteer-built and self-funded float. Bargain hunters, thrifters, and vintage enthusiasts are invited to hunt for treasures, and the community is encouraged to clear out their closets and garages for a good cause. Donations for the sale, which can be dropped off at the site from Tuesday, May 14 through Thursday, May 16, 2024, are needed and greatly appreciated. Event organizers offer pickups for large items, making it easy to contribute.

In addition to building the float, South Pasadena’s 17-member Tournament of Roses Committee must raise $150,000 to fund the endeavor each year. Participation in SPTOR’s yard sale directly contributes to making South Pasadena’s Tournament of Roses entry a reality.

“We aim to raise several thousands of dollars,” said Steve Fillingham, yard sale co-coordinator and member of the SPTOR Committee. “This is an important part of our fundraising efforts each year. Last year, we had more than 200 shoppers each day,” he estimated.

The sale runs at 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, May 17 and 18 at the War Memorial Building at 435 Fair Oaks Avenue in South Pasadena. Parking is available in the War Memorial Building parking lot and on Fair Oaks Avenue. Fillingham advises those parking on Fair Oaks to “turn your wheels to the curb.”

All sale items are donated by community members. Collectibles, tools, electronics, antiques, furniture, dishware, jewelry, children’s items and many other treasures can be found at the “garage sale on steroids”— all at bargain prices. The Yard Sale team rents a U-Haul and offers pickup service to help residents who cannot drop off large or bulky items. Community members should email sftballsteve@aol.com to request a pickup.

“As they say, ‘One person’s trash is another person’s treasure.’ SPTOR Yard Sale is a great opportunity for people to clear out things they no longer need or want,” Fillingham said.

Donation drop-off dates and times are as follows:

Tuesday           May 14            4 to 6 p.m.

Wednesday     May 15           5 to 8 p.m.

Thursday         May 16           4 to 8 p.m.

Items should be dropped off at the lower parking lot of the War Memorial Building off Mound Avenue.

Large appliances, entertainment centers, mattresses and box springs cannot be accepted. All donations are tax deductible. For more information, contact Fillingham at sftballsteve@aol.com.

In addition to donations, volunteers are crucial in making this event successful. “We need volunteers throughout the sale, especially when it ends Saturday, and the team must clear out the building that evening.” Steve Fillingham explains. To learn more, email sftballsteve@aol.com.
