  • Commissioners Needed – Apply Today! The City is seeking qualified, diverse candidates to serve on City commissions ranging from animal welfare to public safety. THIS IS A WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY TO BE MORE INVOLVED IN OUR CITY! Commissions serve as advisory bodies to review City policy issues and provide policy recommendations to the City Council. All South Pasadena residents who are registered to vote are eligible to serve on a commission. To see which commissions have positions available and to apply, go to our WISPPA Commission webpage.
  • Due to the rainy weather last week, the Annual Holiday Tree Lighting Celebration has been postponed! It will now be held on Thursday, December 6, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. ( Maybe?) Mayor Richard Schneider will light the tree at 5:30 p.m. There will be entertainment before and after the tree lighting . Santa Claus will be there along with other fun surprises and activities.
  • The Housing Rights Center (HRC) will be hosting FREE Housing Rights Workshops throughout Los Angeles and Ventura County. HRC will present information and resources regarding landlord/tenant rights and responsibilities, Fair Housing, and housing discrimination. Thursday, December 13 at 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon at the Pasadena Central Library. Topics will include: discrimination against families with children, disability rights, sexual harassment, evictions, repairs, security deposits, rent increases, substandard conditions, and much more!   • The Final Environmental Impact Report/Environmental Impact Statement (Final EIR/EIS) for the State Route 710 (SR-710) North Project is now available. Caltrans has selected the Transportation System Management/Transportation Demand Management (TSM/TDM) Alternative as the Preferred Alternative for the SR-710 North Project. The SR-710 North Final EIR/EIS may be accessed at http://www.dot.ca.gov/d7/env-docs/docs/SR710NorthProject/.
  • The South Pasadena Senior Center is inviting the community to help bring cheer to SP senior residentswho live by themselves and are housebound and alone for the holidays. YOU CAN HELP. Through Dec 14, donate gift cards to local businesses as well as cookies and candy so that they can assemble meaningful, cheerful and tasty gift baskets. The following is needed: gift cards of $10 to $25 in value from places like McDonald’s, Pavillions, Rite Aid, Target, Trader Joe’s, Vons, wrapped cookies and chocolates (factory packaged and unopened) as well as cash donations to go towards gift card purchases. Donations can be dropped off from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Senior Center at 1102 Oxley. For more info, call 626-403-7360.

Breakfast with Santa will be held on Saturday, December 8, 2018 from 9 am to 11 am at the War Memorial Building, 435 Fair Oaks Avenue. This event is fun for the entire family! Expect arts & crafts, fun, and a delicious breakfast. Parents, make sure to have your camera ready, Santa will be available for photos. Please plan to arrive early as doors will close at 9:30 am. Tickets are $15 per person, children under 2 are free. Register at the Recreation Division office, 815 Mission Street, Monday through Friday from 10 am to 6 pm, or visit our website www.southpasadenaca.gov/recreation to register on-line. Spaces are limited and all sales are final.
South Pasadena Woman’s Club Holiday Boutique and Christmas Store Saturday Dec. 8 from 9:30 – 3 pm at the festively decorated Woman’s Club historic Clubhouse, 1424 Fremont Avenue. This Year, SANTA CLAUS will be there to meet and greet kids and shoppers. New vendors and returning favorites for your shopping pleasure. There will be a club cooked lunch at 11:00 to 1:00 for $8.
Chutes & Ladders: Terry Braunstein Artist Talk: December 8, 2018, 6-7:30PM Through January 4, 2019 SPARC Gallery @ Chamber of Commerce This exhibition consists of 12 assemblages by Long Beach multi-media and photo-montage artist Terry Braunstein. Braunstein is a philosopher as well as an artist — her creative weave of archetypes and ancient myths coupled with modern images found in the contemporary magazines, gives us profound insight. Her creative juxtapositions are often surprising and even humorous, reflecting how our own private, mundane world is connected to all of humanity, and how our life passages and experiences reflect universal themes.
Barks and Books (Read to a Dog) at the Library Wednesday, December 12 at 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM Library Children’s Room 1100 Oxley Street Children are invited to visit the Library to read animal-related short stories of their choice to dogs from the Pasadena Humane Society Companion Animal Program. Not only does this make reading more fun, it also builds a child’s confidence in reading aloud. Also, the available books will help children realize that animals experience a range of emotions similar to their own and that they have basic needs too. This will, in turn, encourage them to appreciate the importance of treating all animals with respect and kindness. Sign-ups are required.
League Members Annual Holiday Party. Thursday, December 13 at 4:00 – 7:00 PM. There will be delicious food, excellent conversation, and a chance to meet other League members at a festive and happy occasion. Buy a ticket for your chance to win a lovely holiday gift basket!

Assemply Member Holden’s Annual Holiday Open House. Thursday, December 13 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. 41st Assembly District Office 600 N. The LA County Registrar office will hold a series of meetings all over the County seeking public input on where to locate the new voting centers that will replace polling sites in the 2020 election. On Thursday, December 13 7:00 pm-9:00 pm , there will be a meeting for our area at the H&H Jivalagian Youth Center, 2242 E Foothill Blvd, Pasadena. Our area includes: Altadena Alhambra, Arcadia, Pasadena, San Gabriel, San Marino, South Pasadena, Sierra Madre and Temple City.
Elf Jr. – The Musical Presented by Young Stars Theatre Through December 16 at the Fremont Centre Theatre. Back by popular demand! One of the most popular YST shows EVER! “Elf Jr.” tells the story of Buddy, a young orphan, who mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and is transported to the North Pole. SPTOR hosts a morning “mixer” at the float site – come get a sneak peak of the float and hear what’s new! Wednesday, December 19 at 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. This is a free event, with raffle prizes! Coffee and refreshments provided by SPTOR. Location: War Memorial Building

Otter Story Hour A live storytelling event held in the basement of a pub, Griffins of Kinsale, from 7 to 9 pm usually on the first Monday of the month. Visit the website and our Facebook page Our Otter storytellers pull up meaningful experiences from the depths of their lives, crack them open on their heart to expose what is tender and get them off their chest. When they do this we are all nourished, strengthened, enlivened. They re-mind us what we love about life. We can’t help watching.
The Community Services Department is hosting the fourth annual Snow Day event on Saturday, January 19, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at Garfield Park, 1000 Park Avenue. There will be sled runs, a snow play area, a sled area for younger kids as well as a Tot Land area. Refreshments will be sold on site. Wristbands vouchers may be purchased here , pre-sale tickets are $10, and $15 the day of the event. There will be 4-45 minute sessions starting at 10:00 a.m., which can be selected online at the time of purchase. Each wristband is good for 45 minutes of access
