South Pasadena High girls’ basketball team will finish top three in the league

SPHS girls' basketball team fell to Culver City 67-48 on the road Saturday, Feb. 17, 2018 in a second round CIF-Southern Section game. The Tigers are expected to bring back a strong team for the 2018-19 season.

With playoff implications on the line, South Pasadena High’s girls’ basketball team came up big Tuesday night with a key 40-37 home victory over Temple City in Rio Hondo League action.

The Tigers avenged a 59-54 loss to the Rams earlier in the season.

With one game left in the regular season, South Pasadena and Temple City have identical league records. The frontrunner is La Canada at 9-0, 21-4 overall followed by Temple City 6-3, 17-9; South Pasadena 6-3, 12-15; San Marino 4-5, 16-9; Monrovia 2-7, 3-20 and Blair 0-9, 0-9.

Tuesday was Senior Night for the team where their senior players were honored by teammates, friends and family.

South Pasadena finishes the regular season Thursday night with a 5:30 p.m. game at Blair and can finish no worse than third in league play. A win by the Tigers and a loss by Temple City, which faces Monrovia, will put South Pasadena in second place.

The top three teams move onto the CIF-Southern Section playoffs starting next week. First round opponents are expected to be announced on Sunday or Monday morning.
