Let’s have a laugh, South Pas! Square Deal Barbershop is hosting a weekly comedy show in its outdoor space behind the shop featuring local stand-up comedians. The shows are Thursday evenings at 7pm and the kickoff show is Thursday, September 23.
Producer, Daniel McRobbie, tells us he hopes the local community will stop by the show towards the end of their Farmers Market outings to take in the weekly lineup of comedy, which will be new and different each week. McRobbie is a comic himself and serves as host of Square Up. September 23rd features Ahmed Al-Kadri, Heather Donaldson, Cooper Lyden, Vance Sanders, Christine Medrano, and Jared Goldstein. September 30th features Nick Taravella, Veronica Kwiatowski, Teresa Lo, Cole Alexander, Kelly Ryan, and Bruce Gray.
“I have been wanting to start a show for a few years now, I’ve just been looking for the perfect venue,” says McRobbie. “The pandemic changed what the perfect venue is currently, so having an outdoor space where people can be a little more at ease was crucial. I found the space at Square Deal when I was getting a haircut and they were a little backed up. It can be difficult to find an outdoor venue that works well acoustically, but the back patio has enclosed walls on three sides,” he explains.
McRobbie has teamed up with John Halminski, owner of Square Deal Barbershop, to try and create an amazing local space where he says he can bring the best comics in Los Angeles to South Pasadena. “The goal is to have a show where people see the best comics they maybe haven’t heard of yet and also a few amazing drop-ins sporadically.” He goes on to say that “most of the people we have on have performed in clubs across the country, some have done late night spots on network tv, or contributed to popular shows on Netflix, HBO and Comedy Central, but haven’t really become household names yet. It’s a ‘get to see them before they are famous’ sort of thing.”
Square Deal Barbershop is located at 1108 Mission Street in South Pasadena.
