Kenny Rogers may have sung it best.

“You’ve got to know when to hold ’em
Know when to fold ’em
Know when to walk away
And know when to run…”

Odds are good that someone will likely be singing Rogers’ popular song when the South Pasadena Middle School Booster Club hosts its 6th annual Main Event Poker on March 14, from 7:00 to 11:00 p.m., at the War Memorial Building.

Returning to lend their support to the SPMS Booster Club will be members of the D.U.D.E.S. – Dads Uniting Dads in Education and Service – known for their efforts in giving back to the community.

Founded in 2012, the D.U.D.E.S. are a non-profit organization that “harnesses the charity, commitment and compassion of local families in order to foster better educational and social opportunities for our community,” according to their website.

Over the years they have helped with city events, community improvements, fundraising support for the local school district, fostering relationships, supported the South Pasadena police and fire departments and donated countless volunteer hours.

The SPMS Main Event Poker Tournament was a huge success a year ago as approximately $19,000 was raised for the event, which typically sells out. The $100 buy-in includes 2,000 chips, dinner, and beverages. For $25, individuals can eat, drink, socialize and enjoy free Blackjack.

“Parents, neighbors, friends or relatives, whether you just want to try your hand or you’re a card shark, we promise a fun evening for everyone,” said Bill Buckley with the SPMS Athletic Booster Club.

Afterschool sports at South Pasadena Middle School are funded through Athletic Boosters Club memberships and the annual poker tournament. “Enjoy a great night with friends,” said Buckley. “Our goal is to foster school spirit by giving all students an opportunity to interact and support each other. Whether playing or being a fan cheering on their friends, all students can benefit from the Athletic Boosters.”

More advice from Rogers for those taking part in this year’s Main Event designed to raise big dollars for the SPMS Booster Club:

“You never count your money
When you’re sittin’ at the table
There’ll be time enough for countin’
When the dealin’s done…”
