A combination of squandered opportunities and untimely penalties contributed to South Pasadena’s 35-21 defeat at the hands of visiting Monrovia. At the end of the first half, with time running out with no time outs, the Tigers attempt to take the lead ended at the goal line when a short field goal attempt failed.

In the second half, it appeared that the Tigers had tied the game on a pass to Richard Conti for a touchdown when the officials ruled there was illegal blocking penalty which voided the the score.

Running back Jason Hong was the workhorse for the offense as he ground out huge chunks of yardage against the Wildcats with his running prowess. Things went south from there. The Tigers whose defense dominated the Wildcats in the first half were unable to contain Monrovia’s speedy running backs and unable to pressure their quarterback.
Several key penalties and turnovers also did not help South Pasadena’s stalled drives into Monrovia territory. The loss was the first of the season for the unbeaten Tigers who went into the game sporting a 5-0 record. It also sustained the Wildcats domination over the locals who haven’t beaten Monrovia in 20 years.
