The Sierra Madre Playhouse continues its acclaimed Music @ the Playhouse series with an evocative evening of early English vocal music performed by Musica Transalpina on Saturday, August 23 at 7:30 p.m. Known for its historically informed and emotionally resonant interpretations, the Southern California ensemble will present a program that brings to life rarely heard gems from early Tudor England.
Under the direction of Musical Director Bryan Roach, the program centers on Missa O bone Jhesu by Robert Fayrfax, a masterpiece commissioned by Lady Margaret Beaufort, mother of Henry VII and grandmother of Henry VIII. Preserved in choir books dating from the early 16th century, the mass reflects a period when English music captivated Continental audiences with its characteristic refinement and sweetness.

The concert will take place inside the 99-seat Sierra Madre Playhouse, a venue celebrated for its intimacy and acoustics. This historic space offers an ideal atmosphere for audiences to fully experience the ensemble’s artistry—music that is at once centuries old and vibrantly present.
