911 calls came into the South Pasadena Police Department about 11:10AM Friday morning with reports of gunfire in Garfield park.

Residents reported hearing a single gunshot near the Mission end of the park. There were children and families present.

Police arrived on the scene within two minutes and secured the area. No injuries have been reported at this time. Police have not reported yet if the person responsible for the gunshot was detained, however park-adjacent residents report yellow police tape cordoned off an area and a person sitting in handcuffs.

UPDATE: Person Arrested

According to South Pasadena Police: A dispute between several people on the 800 block of Park Avenue (Garfield Park) escalated to a shooting at approximately 11:21 a.m. Responding to the incident, law enforcement was informed en route that gunfire had occurred.

Upon reaching the scene, officers verified that shots had been fired from Park Avenue into the nearby park, which was occupied by children and families at the moment of the incident.

The suspect, described as a Hispanic male wearing a pink hooded sweatshirt and a balaclava-type “ski mask,” fled in an older model blue Toyota Camry with rear traffic collision damage.

There were possibly two other men in the vehicle wearing dark hooded sweatshirts.

The vehicle and driver were later located in the Northeast area of Los Angeles. The juvenile suspect is now in custody, and South Pasadena Police Detectives are currently searching for the two outstanding subjects.

The investigation is ongoing, and Garfield Park was reopened for public use several hours after the shooting.

SPPD reports this as a random incident involving people outside of South Pasadena. The department cannot speak to motive yet, and is not yet releasing information as to whether the incident was gang related.
