In celebration of Halloween, the South Pasadena Public Library will hold the Second Annual Scary Story Contest. Children and teens in grades Kindergarten through 12th grade are invited to submit entries to the South Pasadena Public Library from Monday, August 15 through Saturday, September 10. Submissions should be delivered to the South Pasadena Public Library Children’s Services desk. The winners will be announced in mid-October.

Submissions must include an official entry form, which are available on the Children’s Services web page at www.southpasadenaca.gov/children and in the library, starting on Monday, August 15. Submitted stories can be up to 300 words, or 1 page typed. One entry per person. No weapons may be used in the story. All entries must be the original work of the student. Parents may transcribe a young child’s story. Entries will be judged for creativity and originality. The winning compositions will be featured on the library’s website and social media.

The entries will be judged by the Children’s Services librarians and by special judge, Xanthe Pajarillo, a director-writer, podcaster and Air Force veteran from Germany and Virginia. She directed the 2021 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards on Shudder, has written for Fangoria and Bloody Disgusting, and with her 13-year old niece and co-hosts she wrote a kids horror podcast titled Kindergeist. Kindergeist explores horror through fun, inspiring and meaningful dialogue. She received her MFA from USC’s School of Cinematic Arts, her BFA from CalArts, and is an intern alumni of HBO, Will and Jada Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment and Michel Gondry’s Partizan Entertainment.
