A Cinematic Journey to the Coldest, Wildest Place on Earth
The California Science Center IMAX Theater will premiere Antarctica 3D, a breathtaking giant-screen documentary from BBC Earth and SK Films, beginning June 21, 2025. Narrated by Academy Award® nominee Benedict Cumberbatch, the film transports audiences to Antarctica, the most remote, frigid, and mysterious continent on the planet.
Produced by the team behind Planet Earth II, Antarctica 3D uses cutting-edge technology and never-before-seen footage to dive beneath sea ice more than six feet thick, soar above majestic peaks, and swim alongside seals, penguins, and massive gatherings of fin and humpback whales.
Science, Spectacle, and Urgency on the Giant Screen
Antarctica may be the coldest, driest, and windiest place on Earth, but it teems with life—from penguin colonies to playful marine mammals. The film captures this surprising abundance in vivid detail, offering a front-row seat to natural wonders few humans have seen.
It also underscores Antarctica’s global significance. The continent and its surrounding Southern Ocean are critical for regulating sea levels and ocean currents, and their carbon-absorbing waters help balance the planet’s climate. Scientists warn that rapid environmental changes are occurring, and global collaboration is essential to protect this fragile region.
