The Los Angeles Clarinet Choir, a group of 14 professional clarinetists performing on sopranino, soprano, alto, bass, contra-alto and contrabass clarinets under the direction of their conductor, Margaret Thornhill, will perform a Cherry Blossom Festival-themed concert of contemporary Japanese music for clarinet ensemble at the South Pasadena Public Library Community Room at 1115 El Centro Street in South Pasadena on Saturday, March 11, 2023, at 3:00 p.m. Admission is free.

Works included on the program are: Journey of Leaf by Itaru Sakai; The Gifts of Kumamoto Folksong by Kazuhiro Morita; Falling of the Seasons by Yoshio Nakahashi; Sakura Song by Yusuke Fukuda; Fujiko, a beautiful ballad for E-flat clarinet by UK jazz composer Andy Scott; The Twelfth Night by Masanori Taruya; and the United States west coast premiere of Scene of the City and the Sea by the popular Japanese clarinet artist known as Micina.

Throughout Japan, recreational clarinet ensembles are popular as community, school, and corporate musical teams, which frequently commission well-known film score composers to write original music for concerts and regional competitions. Many of these original works are published and are becoming known throughout the West.
