Loma Alta Park has officially reopened following extensive revitalization efforts led by the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation. Severely impacted by the Eaton Fire, the park has undergone a transformation into a “super park,” complete with upgraded facilities, expanded programs, and new community partnerships designed to support Altadena residents.

“Loma Alta Park is a vital gathering place where our community can come together, especially in times of healing,” said Kathryn Barger, Chair of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. “This reopening represents a meaningful step forward for Altadena, fostering both recovery and connection.”

Community Support Powers Park Transformation

More than 2,000 volunteers helped paint murals, plant trees and shrubs, and spread mulch throughout the park. Thanks to widespread community and philanthropic support, the park now features new playgrounds, athletic fields, and tech hubs.

“Loma Alta Park was fortunate that none of its buildings burned,” said Norma E. García-González, Director of LA County Parks. “This allowed us to move quickly to meet the community’s needs.”

Major Enhancements Include:

  • Playgrounds: A $2.4 million grant from FireAid funded two ADA-accessible playgrounds featuring a 3-story play structure—the first of its kind.
  • Alta Chat Space: Funded by Supervisor Barger, this new social hub offers Adirondack chairs and a community meeting spot.
  • Dodgers Dreamfields: The LA Dodgers Foundation created the only baseball fields in Altadena.
  • Clippers Court and Tech Center: Renovated by the LA Clippers Foundation with Pechanga Resort & Casino, featuring a gym upgrade and a new computer lab.

Expanded Programming and Social Services

Loma Alta Park now offers a broad range of services, addressing needs amplified by the Eaton Fire:

  • Senior and Library Services: Satellite senior center and library in partnership with LA County and Altadena Library District.
  • Youth Programs: Over 125 new childcare and after-school program slots created in response to the loss of early childhood education facilities.
  • Youth Employment: 15 local youth employed through LADOE’s Youth@Work initiative.
  • Mental Health Support: Onsite clinicians now available through the Department of Mental Health.
  • Teen Services: The Our SPOT Teen Center opens with daily services for ages 12–18.
  • Recreational Updates: The park’s pool has been reglazed and reopened for summer use.

Grand Reopening Celebration Brings Community Together

To mark the occasion, LA County Parks hosted an all-day celebration with a ribbon cutting, marionette theater performance, sports clinics, food tastings, and a live concert. Highlights included appearances by Mickey and Minnie Mouse and a “Taste of Altadena” picnic.

Thanks to donors like TreePeople, the LA Conservation Corps, and local nurseries, the park now features 44 newly planted trees and vibrant public murals by artists including Victor Ving, Eric Junker, and others.
