Students today face all kinds of pressures and stresses. Young people ages 9- to 14-years old can unwind and learn how to recharge when they attend the Spring Wellness Series for Tweens on April 11, 18, and 25, from 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. in the South Pasadena Public Library Community Room, located at 1115 El Centro Street. Sessions will introduce students to yoga, mindfulness, and stress-relief through creative arts. Programs are free, but students must
be registered at www.southpasadenaca.gov/register or by calling Children’s Services at (626) 403-7358.
On April 11, Marisa Reyes will lead a fun and engaging yoga session that teaches students how to calm themselves through breathing, movement and meditation. Ms. Reyes, who teaches both adult and children’s yoga classes, will present the basics of how yoga contributes to healthy bodies and minds.
The mindfulness session on April 18 focuses on concentration as a way to teach students to pay attention to what is happening in the current moment. Presenter Christine Higgins Chin teaches Mindfulness Schools Curriculum at Marengo Elementary in South Pasadena. She has over 15 years of experience in contemplative practices and training in mindfulness-based programs. Creative expression is another technique students can use to relax and refocus.
On April 25 artist Danielle Bashton will lead a cut paper art project that promotes play and experimentation and allows students to set aside their worries. Ms. Bashton has degrees in Interior Design and Studio Arts, and has shown her work in many galleries and museums throughout the United States and Canada.
