It’s no secret that South Pasadena did not become what it is by accident. But how and when do you jump-in and carry the torch? Right now is a good time.
The tree-lined streets, the historic homes, the rhythm of neighborhoods that feel connected and livable—these are the result of decades of decisions, stewardship, and, at times, hard-fought battles to protect what makes this city different.
Now, once again, the City’s future is being shaped in real time.
The City has launched a community survey and public process around Objective Design Standards—a framework that will determine how new multi-family and mixed-use development looks, feels, and fits into South Pasadena. At the same time, a Pre-Approved ADU Program is being introduced to streamline backyard housing, making it faster and more accessible for homeowners to build.
These may sound like technical programs. They are not. The results will become part of the blueprint for what South Pasadena becomes next.
A City Defined by Its Details
The buildings designed with setbacks, the scale, the canopy of mature trees, the architecture that, while varied, speaks the same language. It creates a place that feels intentional, not assembled. Livable, interesting, and valuable – rich in meaningful neighborhoods that matter.
At this trajectory in the imposed housing laws from the State of California, the South Pasadena way of life can be reinforced intentionally by design— or our neighborhoods will be chipped away, project by project, decision by decision.

The Pressure on South Pasadena Is Real
Change is not hypothetical. It is already here.
State laws like SB 79 will increase allowable density and building heights near transit, including right here in South Pasadena. That means more development is coming, regardless of local preference.
What is still local is how that development looks.
Whether new buildings step back or loom over streets.
Whether they engage the sidewalk—or turn inward behind garages and blank walls.
Whether they respect the existing rhythm—or ignore it entirely.
These are not abstract design questions. They are quality-of-life decisions being made now.
The Difference Between Growth and Erosion
South Pasadena has long shown that preservation and progress are not opposites—they can work together when done thoughtfully. But that balance does not happen automatically.
Without clear, enforceable standards, development tends to default toward scale, efficiency, and cost—not character. That’s when you begin to see buildings that feel out of place, streets that lose their cohesion, and neighborhoods that no longer feel like they belong to themselves.
On the other hand, when standards are done right, growth can feel more natural—even advantageous—because it fits. That planning is what City Leadership is doing now – and the input of South Pasadena Residents is crucial.
This Is Where the Community Comes In
The City is actively asking for input—and this is one of those moments where participation matters.
Residents can:
-
Take the Objective Design Standards survey
-
Attend the ADU Community Meeting on March 26 at the Library Community Room
-
Participate in upcoming public meetings, including the April 8 joint session
This feedback will not sit on a shelf. It will shape the rules that guide development moving forward, and we’ll be watching and reporting.
The Path Forward
There is no version of the future where South Pasadena does not change, and even grow a bit.
The real question is whether that change feels like South Pasadena, or be stuck with whatever California State Senator Scott Wiener wants.
That means growth that respects scale.
Design that acknowledges context.
Streets that remain walkable and human.
And a continued commitment to the idea that what has been built here over generations is worth carrying forward.
Because once the character of a place is lost, it is rarely rebuilt.
And right now, the pen is still in the community’s hand – your hand.
