The magic is officially underway as South Pasadena launches construction of its 2026 Rose Parade® float entry, “The Great Picnic Heist.” Designed by local artist Renee Hoss-Johnson, the whimsical float celebrates this year’s parade theme, “The Magic of Teamwork.”

Volunteer builders and decorators from the South Pasadena Tournament of Roses (SPTOR) team have already begun the hands-on work to bring the design to life, continuing a long-standing community tradition of creativity and collaboration.
A Strong Start and Stronger Community Support
A record number of participants came together on June 14 for one of the organization’s most successful fundraisers yet—a golf tournament at Arroyo Seco Golf Course. With generous support from sponsors and a full turnout of golfers, the event helped raise vital funds for float construction.

The Sandwich Spot of Palm Springs claimed first place among teams, adding some lighthearted competition to the festive day.
Banners and Business Support Drive Progress
If you’ve visited the SPTOR float site recently, you may have spotted new banners decorating the sides of the tent. These banners represent local businesses, organizations, and individuals who have contributed financially to support the purchase of construction materials and floral decorations.
Banner sponsorships are still available. Interested parties can contact Wende Lee at 323-399-1362 or via email at [email protected] to reserve a spot and help beautify this community-built masterpiece.
Volunteer Opportunities Open to the Community
As always, the float’s success depends on the volunteers who dedicate their time and talent to both its construction and decoration. Those interested in joining the build crew can reach out to [email protected].
The “Deco Squad”—responsible for adding the stunning floral touches—will begin sign-ups starting September 15 at www.sptor.org.
Sneak Peek at the Beast
Before full float transformation begins, the raw chassis—fondly called “the beast” by float chair Ed Donnelly—made an early public appearance at the 2025 Festival of Balloons Parade. Members of the float committee, construction, and design teams rode atop the chassis along Mission Street, giving the community a first look at “The Great Picnic Heist.”
The ride marked both a celebration of the float’s unveiling and a joyful kickoff for the months of teamwork and artistry to come.
