South Pasadena High’s badminton team has reason to celebrate after coming away with an 11-10 victory over Cypress last Saturday at Arcadia High to win its first CIF-Southern Section Division 1 Badminton championship.

Talk about a comeback story. This one has all the makings for it.

The Tigers finished fourth in league, which also includes Arcadia, San Marino and Mark Keppel,  and today sits all alone at the top of CIF play.

It’s a huge success story, a story South Pasadena High Athletic Director Greg Luna likes to tell.

“They played in a very competitive league,” he said. “and they did really well to get where they are today.”

South Pasadena got past Wilson of Hacienda Heights 12-9 in the CIF semifinals to set up Saturday’s match against Cypress.

Luna explained that badminton has three levels. The open division, Division 1 and the second level tournament.
