A beloved South Pasadena tradition is calling on the community to help bring warmth and comfort to those in need. Sip ‘n Stitch, a volunteer-based fiber arts group hosted by Calvary Presbyterian Church, is welcoming new participants to its weekly Saturday gatherings amid rising demand for blanket donations across Los Angeles County.
Over 1,600 Blankets Donated—and Counting

For more than 30 years, Sip ‘n Stitch has created and donated over 1,600 handmade blankets to hospitals, shelters, and nonprofit organizations including Elizabeth House, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Angel Interfaith Network, and Union Station Homeless Services. Most recently, the group supported Eaton Canyon fire victims, North Carolina flood survivors, and patients at LAC + USC Medical Centers.
But as requests increase, the group’s inventory is running low—and they are asking for the public’s help.
All Ages and Skill Levels Welcome—No Experience Needed
Everyone is welcome, regardless of crafting experience. Volunteers knit blocks, stitch them together, and crochet finishing borders to complete each blanket. Beginners receive guidance, and high school students can earn community service hours.
Participants may join in person or take yarn home to work independently. All sessions include access to coffee, tea, baked goods, stitching supplies, and most importantly—a warm and friendly atmosphere.
How You Can Help
In addition to volunteering, community members are encouraged to donate yarn—specifically 100% acrylic worsted weight yarn, which directly supports blanket-making efforts. Donations can be dropped off during gatherings.
