Act of Heroism | Tracking Down a Bike Thief

A man steals bike, and just like in the movies a motorist in a truck turns around and helps a pair of teens track down the victim

Looking forward to a bike ride as a means for getting out of the house for a little exercise last Tuesday night, Aubry was outside talking to her brother, as she waited for her mother inside the home to join her, when the unexpected happened.

“Suddenly a man came walking right up to Aubry, into our yard,” Lisa, Aubry’s mom explained, “grabbed her bike, hopped on it and started riding away.”

Aubry, 14, yelled, “Oh my gosh he’s stealing my bike!”

“I was inside finishing up work,” said Lisa, noting her  17-year-old son, Sam, had just finished a Crossfit workout via Zoom on the driveway and was cooling down when she heard her daughter’s cry for help.

Aubry was standing with her back to the sidewalk in-between two bikes talking to Sam when the man made the mad dash and began pedaling her two-wheeler down the street.

Instinct kicked in, noted Lisa, and Aubry, and Sam, started running after the man.  As they chased him down the street, a motorist in a truck driving the opposite direction saw they needed help and quickly turned around.

“Sam got into the bed of the truck and they drove down the street and caught up to the thief riding away,” said Lisa, saying her son then jumped out of the back of the vehicle and tackled the man in midair as he was riding, “knocking him off the bike, onto the road.”

Like an action-packed movie, in the next instant Sam grabbed the bike, and as the man started running away. Watching him flee the scene, Sam yelled: “Nobody messes with my sister and don’t ever come back!”

Local police were called in and eventually caught the suspect, described as being in his mid-20s.

“I have a literal superhero in my house,” said Lisa. “Unfreaking real.”

Today, laughing at the situation, she jokes: “Apparently, watching action movies pays off.”
