For over 65 years, Samera Arkel and her family have called Altadena home, a place where they built not just houses but a legacy of love, generosity, and community. However, a devastating fire recently swept through their neighborhood, leaving Arkel, her family, and many others without their homes.

“The places that held our happiest memories are no longer standing,” Arkel shared. “But the love that built them—that love still remains.”

A Home That Welcomed All

Arkel’s family home was more than just a residence—it was a sanctuary. Her parents raised five children there, offering shelter and support to neighbors, friends, and family members in need.

“Our doors were always open,” Arkel recalled. “My parents made sure that anyone who needed comfort had a place to stay.”

She and her mother also dedicated years to caring for elderly neighbors, providing meals and companionship. Their lives revolved around giving back to the community that had given them so much.

Then, in an instant, everything was gone. The fire reduced their homes to ashes—including the event space Arkel built, 409 Woodbury, a business she started after losing her clothing stores during the pandemic.

“It’s hard to put into words what it means to lose everything that made you feel safe, rooted, and whole,” she said.

Finding Strength in Community

Despite the immense loss, Samera Arkel remains committed to rebuilding her life and helping others do the same. She believes that Altadena’s spirit of giving and unity will carry them forward.

“We’ve always believed that when you give, you don’t just change someone else’s life—you build something greater than yourself,” she said.

The road to recovery is long, but Arkel is determined to restore what was lost and continue making a difference in the lives of those around her.
