An Author Night presenting nationally known novelist, award-winning novelist Lisa Wingate will be showcased in the beautiful, historic South Pasadena Public Library Community Room on Tuesday, June 27 at 7:00 p.m. The free program is presented by the South Pasadena Public Library, the Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library, and Flintridge Bookstore and Coffeehouse. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

Lisa Wingate is a former journalist, a motivational speaker, and the author of more than twenty popular novels. Her work has won or been nominated for many prestigious awards, including the Pat Conroy Southern Book Prize, the Oklahoma Book Award, the Utah Library Award, and many others. Americans for More Civility, a kindness watchdog organization, selected Lisa along with six others for the National Civies Award, which celebrates public figures who promote greater kindness and civility in American life.

Prior to becoming an author, Lisa dreamed of becoming an Olympic gymnast or winning the National Finals Rodeo. Although those dreams were not realized, her goal of becoming a top selling writer did. Lisa has said that she was also lucky enough to marry into a big family of cowboys and southern storytellers who have helped inspire some of the characters in her novels.

Lisa lives in the mountains of southwest Arkansas and is on tour for her new book, “Before We Were Yours”, published June 6, 2017 by Random House. Translation rights have already been sold in 14 countries and the book has almost immediately been accorded 139 glowing reviews on Amazon.com which average 5 Stars, the highest rating possible.

“Before We Were Yours” is a thought-provoking and complex tale about two families, two generations apart and is based on a notorious true-life scandal that took place in Memphis in 1939. Georgia Tann, director of a Memphis-based adoption organization, kidnapped and sold poor children to wealthy families all over the country.

Twelve-year-old Rill Foss and her four younger siblings live a wonderful life aboard their family’s Mississippi River boat. But when their father rushes their mother to the hospital, Rill is left in charge until strangers arrive in force. Thrown into an orphanage, the Foss children are assured that they will soon be returned to their parents but they quickly realize they are trapped in a world of danger and uncertainty.

In an interwoven storyline, Avery Stafford, born into wealth and privilege in present-day South Carolina, has a successful career as a federal prosecutor and a lavish wedding on the horizon. When Avery returns home to help her father with a health crisis, a chance encounter propels her on a perilous journey through her family’s long-hidden history.

The Library Community Room is located at 1115 El Centro Street. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. No tickets or reservations are necessary and refreshments will be served. Autographed books will be available for purchase. Special thanks to Random House Books, 210eastsound, Kathie Bennett/Magic Time Literary Publicity, and Robin Hokklotubbe.
