The South Pasadena Preservation Foundation (SPPF) will host a guided historical walking tour, The Land of Milk and Money,” on Saturday, March 28, 2026 at 3:30 p.m., offering a curated look at one of the city’s most compelling neighborhood transformations.

Set across the Buena Vista Historic District and Prospect Circle Historic District, the tour traces the evolution of South Pasadena from its agricultural foundations to a center of early twentieth-century prosperity.

From Creamery to Estates: A Neighborhood Transformed

Long before Buena Vista Street became known for its architecturally significant homes, it was part of a working landscape—once home to the Raab Creamery, a local dairy operation that served a growing Southern California region.

Within a matter of decades, that pastoral setting gave way to a collection of refined, architect-designed residences built by industrialists, entrepreneurs, and civic leaders drawn to the area’s opportunity and promise.

“The Land of Milk and Money” explores this shift in detail, highlighting:
• The transition from agricultural enterprise to residential prestige
• The economic forces shaping early South Pasadena
• The ambitions of those who built and settled the neighborhood
• The architectural diversity that remains remarkably intact today

Participants will encounter a layered narrative—where land, industry, and design converge into one of the city’s most historically rich enclaves.

Guided Exploration with Room to Wander

The walking tour is designed to be both informative and approachable, offering guided insights while allowing participants to take in the setting at a comfortable pace.

By focusing on two adjacent historic districts, the experience provides a rare, cohesive view of how a single area can reflect broader regional and economic change.

Garden Reception in a Historic Carriage House

Following the tour, guests are invited to a casual garden reception held on the grounds of a circa-1904 carriage house designed by Egbert James Gates, a property listed on the City of South Pasadena Inventory of Historic Resources.

Set within a secluded “secret garden,” the reception offers:
• Refreshments and light bites
• A relaxed, social atmosphere
• An opportunity to continue conversations sparked during the tour

The setting provides a natural extension of the experience—placing guests within the kind of preserved environment the Foundation works to protect.
