A popular event is back as many in the community will look to kick-start their Fourth of July celebration into high gear with the return of the South Pasadena Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast.

Put on hold since 2019, like the parade, the long tradition of members of the service organization flipping flapjacks has been missed. They began contributing to the festivities as one of the founding organizations of the Independence festivities that began in town in 1982 – 40 years ago.

“People seem to love it,” said John Vandercook, a key Kiwanis organizer of the effort each year. “It’s just one of those things that adds to the excitement of the day.”

At dawn on the Fourth, the South Pasadena Fire Department, at 817 Mound Avenue, will open its doors to the community as Kiwanis members start flipping pancakes. The event is slated from 7 to 11 a.m. and Kiwanis officials are urging the public to get an early start to avoid a long wait.

“Young parents who first attended with their parents and grandparents are now coming with their young children,” said Vandercook. “South Pasadena is just that kind of unique town with long standing special family traditions.”

Youth groups, in the past from the Key Club, Circle K, South Pasadena High and Pasadena City College, are on hand to provide assistance. In addition, the Action Club from the Institute of the Redesign of Learning sends helpers to the breakfast. For more than 40 years, the Institute has provided care for individuals with special needs.

“We love their support, it’s great,” said Vandercook. “They’re very helpful.”

Tickets to the pancake breakfast are $10 and kids 3-and-under are free.

“Come on out,” encouraged Vandercook. “It’s going to be fun.”

Enter the pancake breakfast on Hope Street, behind the fire station. A separate and faster line will be available for pre-sold ticket holders.
