South Pasadena’s resident youth theatre company at Fremont Centre Theatre started the summer off with a Broadway revue and followed that up with their winning production of Willy Wonka Jr. They are back for one final, summer show with eight performances of Annie Warbucks, the irresistible sequel to Annie.
The full scale Broadway musical will be the culmination of a three week camp where students have learned the real deal, ins and outs of being in a professional production. The show itself is all student run in terms of the backstage changes, set changes, props etc. so it’s a tremendous learning experience for the kids and they feel a great sense of pride.
This is the 15th summer camp over the last 20 years for program directors Jack and Gloria Bennett, but the first summer that their camps have been in South Pasadena. The Bennetts say that the community support has been incredible since they made their South Pas debut with their smash hit production of A Christmas Carol in December of 2015. “We are amazed at how people come out for our shows” says Gloria, “It’s not just the parents. We have regular patrons who come to every show, so that shows the kind of arts community we have here in South Pas and that’s wonderful for us.”
Gloria is a professional singer and voice coach and she is musically directing the show, Jack is directing and the always fabulous Mirai Booth-Ong is the choreographer. Annie Warbucks picks up right where Annie leaves off, when Child Welfare Commissioner, Harriet Doyle, arrives on the scene to inform Daddy Warbucks that he must marry within sixty days so the newly adopted Annie can have a proper mother. All the loveable characters are back as we find out if Daddy Warbucks will find a wife in time and if Annie will get to stay with her newfound family. Find out what happens at YST!
