SPPF Annual Meeting | The South Pasadena Preservation Foundation
It’s time for the SPPF Annual Meeting, to be held at the historic Woman’s Club of South Pasadena, 1424 Fremont Avenue, Thursday, June 27 at 6:30 p.m.
Members and non-members alike are invited. A special presentation on Craftsman bungalow homes, the annual activities report, and election of new board members are on the agenda. Food will be offered. There is no charge for the event, but donations will be accepted gratefully. Members will vote on a slate of candidates for open SPPF board positions, which will be circulated in June prior to the meeting.
Featured Presentation: While Craftsman-style residences are easily identifiable, they are not all alike! Craftsman residential architecture in Southern California encompasses several major substyles, ranging from the original Stickley version to the Swiss Chalet substyle and other variants. Recognizing the substyles can increase our enjoyment of the residential architecture of our neighborhoods and enhance the accuracy of our restoration efforts. Pasadena historian and author John Ripley will use current and historical images to illustrate the development and features of several of the different Craftsman versions. Works shown will range from vernacular designs to those of sophisticated architects like Greene & Greene, the Heineman brothers, and Sylvanus Marston.
Speaker, John Ripley, is an architectural historian, preservationist and author who is retired from a career in design engineering and management in the aerospace industry, where he worked on Space Shuttle, missile defense, and aircraft subsystems. John moved to Pasadena (Bungalow Heaven neighborhood) in 1983 and became dedicated to local architecture, compiling a database of 15,000 area building permits issued before World War I, which has proven invaluable for researchers. He also co-authored the book Pasadena’s Bungalow Heaven.
