Woman’s Club of South Pasadena awards scholarships to seven high school seniors

The Woman’s Club of South Pasadena recently awarded scholarships of $3,000 each to seven graduating South Pasadena High School students at the SPHS Awards Night May 24, 2023.

The awardees are Solano Cordon, Alexa Morales,  Danerys Pangelnan, Xochitl Quinones, Reagan Rogers, Dana Soibel, and Kimberly Ramirez.

The winners have been invited to march with the club in the South Pasadena Festival of Balloons 4th of July Parade. The theme for the Woman’s Club entry is “Vote for Women!”

According to the club’s application, scholarships are awareded based on the best demonstration of “a commitment to aiding and elevating women and promoting equality”. Overcoming significant barriers and financial challenges were also considered by the scholarship committee.

Nineteen students applied, both male and female, while name, gender and other identifying details on the applications were redacted before being scored.

“Awarding scholarships is one of the club’s major philanthropic endeavors,” said Liz Calvert, club president, by email. The Woman’s Club of South Pasadena has been awarding these scholarships each year for the last ten years.

“Each year,” she said, “the club holds community events, such as our Sip & Shop Soirée, Holiday Boutique and the recent Spring Fling, to raise funds for the scholarships.”

The Woman’s Club is a nonprofit organization dedicated to service, philanthropy, and  building connections among women of all ages, according to its website.

All winners have been accepted at an accredited college, university or trade school in the 2023-24 academic year.

The winners will be attending these institutions and majoring in the following fields: California State University, Northridge (CSUN) (Broadcast Journalism); Emerson College & Paris College of Art (Film & Cinematic Arts); Sarah Lawrence College (English); University of California, Irvine (UCI) (undeclared); University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) (Applied Mathematics and Economics); University of California, Riverside (UCR) (Business); and the University of Minnesota (Nursing).

The 2023 scholarship committee consisted of Karen Joynt, chair, Lauren Black, Liz Calvert, Claire Collins, Nichole Dunville, Marsha Lau, Heidi Olquin and Tucker Nelson.
