On Saturday, September 23, I walked various routes through South Pasadena knocking on doors to sell greenery. Troop 342 has been selling greenery for the past 72 years, and I was excited to be a part of the tradition. Walking all day and repeating my sales pitch can be tiring, but I knew that it was worth it because in just two weekends we sold $10,000 worth of greenery wreaths. All proceeds from our sales go towards funding Troop activities, which include campouts, service projects, and summer camp. Additionally, the proceeds cover registration fees for all the scouts in our Troop, which means anyone interested can join without worrying about registration fees.

One benefit to walking door to door is that I am able to see all the different areas of South Pasadena. I’ve met people who were part of Troop 342 when they were young. One man cheered us on, yelling, “Go sell that greenery!” Another woman has been buying our greenery for decades and is now 92 years old. I was touched that she remembers and waits for us to knock on her door every fall.
Summer camp can be very expensive, but these greenery sales help cover the cost. This past summer, I spent a week on Catalina Island learning lifesaving skills in the ocean, developing leadership skills, and having fun with other scouts. I hope to attend next summer and learn more advanced scouting skills in first aid, fire safety, and wilderness survival.
