It wasn’t the start South Pasadena High was looking for as the Tigers dropped a 28-0 non-league contest to Schurr Friday night.

After a scoreless first half, Schurr took a 7-0 lead in the third quarter and put three more touchdowns on the board in the fourth to close it out.
Senior quarterback Zachary Lee hit on nine of his 14 passes for 95 yards for the Tigers. On the receiving end were David Eisenberg with three catches for 45 yards, Trey Freking three for 31 and James Dowd two for 24. South Pasadena struggled getting its running game going as the Tigers leading rusher David Ortega was held to 30 yards on six carries.

“Our team showed a lot of heart in the first half, holding Schurr to a 0-0 tie at halftime,” said CB Richards, South Pasadena’s athletic director, taking in the game. “Our defense, in particular, really stepped up, with key stops that kept us in the game early on.”
Richards insists the Tigers will be “working hard to address some specific areas, like our offensive execution in the red zone, the importance of blocking as a team and the special teams details to come back stronger in the next game.”

South Pasadena trailed 14-0 with seven minutes to go in the game and felt like it was still in it until the Spartans ended it with a pair of late scores.
The Tigers look to rebound, seeking their first win on Friday, August 30, when they host Arcadia in a 7 p.m. kickoff.

“While the final score doesn’t reflect the effort and determination our players put in, it’s clear we have the potential to compete,” said Richards.
