ICE’s presence in Los Angeles County and the protests that followed dominated headlines this week. I want to be clear on my stance: I support the rule of law. We need sensible cooperation between federal and local authorities. Immigration enforcement should be orderly. Local law enforcement officers are under immense pressure and deserve our respect, and I stand with our local men and women in uniform.
Meanwhile, I believe that peaceful protest is a cornerstone of our democracy. But, blocking streets, threatening law enforcement, and damaging property is not protest, it’s disorder. Ensuring constitutional rights and maintaining public order can and should go hand in hand. We must reject extremes, whether that’s blanket policies that shield dangerous individuals or fear-driven narratives that hurt families.
