South Pasadena police arrested a 27-year old man from Los Angeles after he allegedly stole a package off the porch of home in the city.

On February 19, just after 6 p.m., an alert SPPD officer was in the 1200 block of Huntington Drive conducting an unrelated investigation when he noticed a man smoking and carrying a large unopened shipping package.

The officer approached the man while advising him of a local ordinance prohibiting smoking near multi-family housing units in South Pasadena.

During the conversation, police say the man gave conflicting information regarding the package and how he came to be in the city.

Further investigating the case, police say the package had been stolen from the front porch of a residence in the area.

Police arrested a John Vallejo, who was booked into Alhambra City Jail for package theft. Officers found drug paraphernalia and other items reportedly stolen from a residence in Alhambra as part of the investigation. Police say Vallejo had an outstanding warrant from a prior arrest. The suspect remains in jail in lieu of a $30,000 bail, according to Sheriff’s officials.
