Under soggy conditions, on and off rain and threatening skies throughout the contest, South Pasadena High boys’ varsity soccer team nearly came away with a CIF-Southern Section Division 3 wildcard win on Monday before falling to visiting Chaminade 2-1 in double overtime.
With the match tied 1-1 after regulation, Chaminade, out of West Hills in the San Fernando Valley, scored in the final minute of the second overtime and only seconds away from settling it with penalty kicks.
“Despite the result, our team showed remarkable teamwork and determination throughout the match, demonstrating their skills both defensively and offensively,” said SPHS Athletic Director CB Richards afterwards.
Zach Millar scored South Pasadena’s only goal on the day off a corner kick in the 70th minute, tying the score at 1-1. “Their resilience in such a closely contested game is a testament to their commitment and passion for the sport,” added Richards.
With the setback, the Tigers finished the season 7-5-3 overall, including 5-2-3 in Rio Hondo League play for third place.
Including Monday’s soccer match, South Pasadena High is host to four CIF-SS playoff games this week. On Tuesday, the Tigers fell 7-6 in triple overtime to Etiwanda in a Division 4 first round girls’ water polo contest.
