SPHS Boys Soccer Holds Banquet and Awards Ceremony

South Pasadena High School boys soccer capped off their season by celebrating this week with a banquet and awards ceremony for the team, coaches and parents. Coach Juan Zurita said, “the SPHS boys soccer team did start off good at the beginning of the season with a strong win vs. Monrovia, but our forward player, Tilo Andac, was injured with a concussion. We tied the next game against La Canada and loss vs. TC. Unfortunately, a few more players were injured, but the team kept playing good soccer and ended up with a league recored of 5-4-1 and overall 8-6-3 with 47 goals and only 19 goals against.” Ending on a an upbeat, hopeful note, Zurita concluded, “We finished 4th – 1 point short to make it to CIF playoffs. I believe that this team will be playing good soccer next season.” Coach Zurita was joined by Assistant Coach Mathewos Ghebrekristos and the entire team.

The following awards were given out: Varsity – Henry Fogel, Varsity Captain, received the highest Rio Hondo award given, MVP Defensive ALL League Rio Hondo along with the MVP Defensive award, Lucien ST. Vaughn received the Coaches Award, Oscar Cassidy received the Offensive Midfielder Player of the Year award, Tilo Andac (Capt.) received the MVP Offensive award, Roddy Foley received the Offensive Player of the Year award, Chris Rosales (Capt.) received the Leadership award, and Shota Maekawa received the Defensive Midfielder of the Year award.

For JV – Ethan Kung received the Coach award, Bruno Rios received the MVP Defensive award, Joe Hwang (Capt.) received MVP Offensive award, Emilio Gonzalez-Mosqueda received the Offensive Player of the Year award, Victor Zarazua (Capt.) received the Midfielder of the Year award, Kasra Ghaffari received the Defensive Player of the Year award, Evan Takeda-Teer received the Leadership award, and Leo Fiss received the Offensive Midfielder of the Year award.
