SPUSD RELEASE

As we approach the final stretch of the 2021-2022 school year, I would like to highlight some of the great achievements during the SPHS winter sports season and provide an update for spring and summer. It is hard to believe that we have almost made it through a full year of regular athletics after a compacted 2020-21 athletic calendar.

In the winter season, 80% of our teams made it into the playoffs. When added to our fall program, that means a total of 91% of our teams made the playoffs. We also had a variety of all-league accolades for our student-athletes with 32 players from South Pasadena receiving recognition (in winter season alone). SPHS took first place in both boys and girls basketball for league play, and girls basketball had a notable season with an overall record of 26-3, making a run to CIF Quarterfinals.

Athletes, parents, and the community have been very active in fundraising efforts and community outreach. Teams hosted tournaments, alumni games, car washes, and swim-a-thons; worked at Tiger Bingo; and held a variety of other fundraisers. These events build camaraderie between the athletes, coaches, parents, and community and help create positive experiences for our youth. This spring, we will continue to offer the same level of activity for our programs.

In the past few weeks, we have registered nearly all of our student-athletes for weekly athletic Covid testing. As restrictions are lifted, we will be modifying our testing plan for athletes. As of March 14, all of our in-season athletes who are in outdoor sports (Girls and Boys Swimming, Boys Tennis, Girls and Boys Track & Field, Boys Golf, Baseball, and Softball) will no longer be mandated to test, unless we experience an outbreak on that team. Since nearly everyone has already registered, we will continue to offer optional testing for any in-season athlete who would like to take a PCR test during the regularly scheduled Monday testing time. Boys Volleyball and Badminton are still required to test weekly.

Looking ahead to summer 2022, we have posted a try-out schedule for incoming and returning players for the 2022-23 school year. SPHS Athletics will take a break and will not host practices or tryouts between June 2 and June 15. Practices and tryouts will resume on June 15, 2022.

Lastly, we have seen a huge resurgence in SPHS Tiger Pride, especially with SPHS merchandise. It is always a pleasure to watch a game and see many of our families and fans wearing Tiger colors. If you would like to purchase additional merchandise, the SPHS Booster Club offers spirit wear for purchase.

I hope to see you all out there as we get into league play this spring season. Go, Tigers!

Regards,

Anthony Chan – SPHS Athletic Director
