SPUSD RELEASE

After a year of very few in-person activities due to COVID-19 and major construction on the SPHS Athletics buildings, Tiger sports have come roaring back to life.

During Athletics Season 2 of the 2020-2021 school year, SPHS Athletics Director Anthony Chan has coordinated 17 programs with varsity, junior varsity, and frosh levels. Every week, student athletes compete in an average of 45 matches Monday through Saturday.

Recently, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health announced that it would allow up to 25% occupancy for indoor sporting events. With this change, two guests per student-athlete may attend matches at the new SPHS Athletics facilities. Student-athletes must register all guests in advance. Also, nearly all of the sporting events are live streamed for everyone to enjoy.

In addition to this complex schedule of events, Chan also has facilitated weekly COVID-19 PCR testing for athletes based on the county health protocols to help keep the athletes and coaches healthy.

As one of the few schools in the area offering a large number of programs for student-athletes, many other districts look to SPHS for recommendations on how to succeed.

Chan is the first to say that it takes a village and commends Principal Janet Anderson, District administrators, health clerks, maintenance staff, food and nutrition services, coaching staff, athletic training staff, and local families who offer unending support to the programs. Congratulations to all the student-athletes and to Mr. Chan for being an outstanding leader.
