South Pasadena Educational Foundation (SPEF) is committed to afterschool enrichment. As State budgets shrink, school districts must frequently make difficult decisions to reduce enrichment offerings. South Pasadena students, however, can enjoy a robust assortment of classes that supplement the school day when they participate in the SPEF’s Afterschool Enrichment program.
They are offering 40 affordable courses for students K-12 in art, language, athletics, STEM and more! Jazz & Hip Hop, Cooking, Robotics, Basketball, Ukulele and Video Game Design are just some of the exciting classes. Classes begin September 11; Below are extended descriptions of a few offerings at the different campuses. So much to choose from!

 

Art & Architecture (Wed 3 – 4:30pm) at Arroyo Vista

Have you heard of the architect, Antonio Gaudi?  His architecture is fun, whimsical, and often breathtaking.  We’ll study the works of architects like Gaudi, then create art and multi-media works in their style.  We’ll practice drafting based on photos of our own homes.  We’ll study art and architecture, and use our knowledge to design our dream home!  Join Ms Smiley and Ms Jones for this great class!

Mindfulness Practice with Art & Fun (Mon 3 – 4pm) at Marengo
Mindfulness is a practice of learning to pay attention to what is happening in the present moment, internally and externally. Though creative activities, games, art making and sitting practice, student develop tools that aid their self awareness and self regulation, all while having fun!  Christine Higgins Chin is a graduate of Mindful School with K-12 curriculum training.  She has more than a decade of experience with contemplative practices as well as training in Mindful Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). She is an artist with a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art & Design.
Soccer Tiny Pros (Wed 3 – 4pm) at Monterey Hills
Brit-West Soccer Instructors will help develop techniques including dribbling, passing, turning and shooting. Students will use their new skills in small team scrimmages, increase game understanding and confidence. Run, jump, kick lots of goals and smile!
Maverick Tennis (Mon 2:30 – 4:00pm) at SPMS
Join our tennis class, to practice skills including forehand, backhand, volley, overhead, serve, and the rules & scoring of the game. Improve fitness and agility, and work on improving form.  Learn to play the game with integrity and have fun!  The coaches at Maverick tennis believe in creating a positive and welcoming environment for all youth players. By focusing on play, building character, and championing individual challenges, we empower students to grow and develop at their own pace. It’s all about providing players the opportunity to enjoy tennis on their own terms.  Using USTA Net Generation curriculum, gives coaches the flexibility to modify lessons to better meet the needs of the player and facilitate development, making learning more fun.
