Student artists at South Pasadena Middle School were tasked with creating Hallway Murals based on the six “Pillars of Character” that SPMS has adopted. SPMS art teacher, Denise Tanaka, led the 7th and 8th grade artists through a collaboration of design and overall look of the murals.

Explains Tanaka, “We based these murals on the 6 Pillars of Character, which SPMS has adopted as guidelines for students that include Respect, Citizenship, Trustworthiness, Caring, Responsibility, and Fairness. After submitting their own designs, students combined the strongest ideas to combine for a final design.”

The overall process took 3 weeks from beginning to end. Tanaka went on to say, “Our hopes are that students take notice of the positive messages as they walk down the hallways of SPMS. They serve not only to beautify our hallways but to serve a greater purpose of spreading positivity.”
