Recently, South Pasadena High School (SPHS) has reimagined and remodeled part of its library space and named it the Tiger Den. The goal was to transform an underutilized space into a bright, open area filled with study nooks and comfortable seating that every student in our district will eventually have the ability to experience as they transition from teenagers to young adults.

This new space, with flexible and modular seating, affords SPHS Tigers a versatile area where they can study, collaborate, and co-design with their fellow students. It will also serve as a space for teachers to conduct lessons and for students to deliver presentations. Additionally, the space will be a place where students can take brain breaks away from their electronics when needed. The development of the Tiger Den is in keeping with SPHS’s commitment to continually improving the student experience at SPHS.

A key component of the design and planning phase was creating a space that not only supports studying but also gives every student a place on campus that is welcoming and inviting. Coming on the heels of the Wellness Center completed two years ago, the Tiger Den will strengthen students’ connections to their school and staff, creating a true home away from home as students prepare for their future.

Over the years, SPHS faculty and staff have worked tirelessly to create a safe and welcoming school environment for all students, as reflected in recent California Healthy Kids Survey Data showing that 71% of SPHS students reported that they feel connected to their campus—a 15% increase from 2018.

“Innovation from the high school team and generous donations from donors such as SPEF and anonymous community members have coalesced to create a space that will further belonging and connectedness between the students and their school, which is impressive,” said Superintendent Angela Elizondo Baxter.

The media is invited to attend the Tiger Den’s ribbon cutting, which will take place at the South Pasadena High School library, located at 1401 Fremont Avenue, on August 11, 2025, at 2:00 p.m.
